What Does LocketsNcharms, Origami Owl Independent Designer Do For Her Team?

April 3, 2013 by Jennylou

Last week, March 26, I wrote the blog post What Is a Mentor and How Do I Choose One For My Origami Owl Independent Designer Business?

There are a lot of things that I mentioned on there.. things that people looking into joining Origami Owl should consider when choosing a Mentor.  I wrote that blog post for 2 reasons:

1. People wanted to know what they should look for in a Mentor.

2. They wanted to know what I was offering as a Mentor (which I didn’t get to cover since the blog post was long enough).

“I wish I knew about how mentorship worked with Origami Owl or with direct sales before I came in to Origami Owl.”  This statement being sent to me dozens of times was the main catalyst to that blog post above.

Many expressed the fear of not succeeding in business but more so afraid of not knowing how to be a mentor because of their situation with theirs.  I assured them that he or she can still have success in business even without the guidance of a Mentor because skills and Mentorship can be learned and caught by observing those they want to be.  Instead of being upset or feeling sorry for one’s self, I recommended they channel that energy into things that will result in success, such as learning how to be an amazing Mentor through people and learning resources, so that when it is one’s turn to grow and build their team, they would be ready to do so.

Then more questions came:  How can I be a good Mentor?  (which I did answer and refer back to the the previous blog post), followed by How Do You Mentor?  What do you do for your team? Do you give any freebies for joining with you?

And so for those inquiring minds, here it is…

The following is just some of what I do for my Team, what I teach my Level 1’s (front line or personally mentored) to do and hope they do it too and pass it on and on and on to their Level 1s.

First Point of Contact Call:  When I am connected with someone or contacted by someone interested in Joining Origami Owl with me, I give them a personal phone call to meet me and thank them for considering me as their Mentor. It starts with a hello.  I do this because I want to meet them, find out what their hope, goals, and dreams are with Origami Owl. More than anything, I want them to make sure they like me because remember? Mentors are permanent, so choose wisely.  And then, we work a plan to get them ready and confident by the time their kit lands on their doorstep.

Designer in Waiting Emails: I send all my DIWs my version of Origami Owl “bootcamp” in the form training emails and YouTube videos. These are designed to prep them for a successful business. These 3 emails are called Origami Owl Basics, Designer Basics, and Jewelry Bar Basics.  I also send them a list of things they can be doing while on the waitlist.  I joke that they might as well get all the reading and training done now because once that jewelry comes in, they will be blinded by its beauty and not want to do any reading or training that is crucial to one’s success.  After each email, I invite DIWs to connect with me once again to answer any questions they may have over what I just sent them.  Making use of the data and turning it into useful information for success is my goal.

Welcome to Origami Owl Email:  This is sent out to every Independent Designer that has joined my team.  Once I see someone added in the back office, I shoot them an email and welcome them to my Team Haute Parliament.  This email covers the very first steps to do as an Independent Designer such as order business cards and visit the back office. In this email, I ask for an appointment for their first training.  The first one we normally do is ‘Back Office Training; What all the tabs and buttons mean back there.”  Also this email lets them know how they can connect with me on my personal FB account and added to our Team’s FB Group.

Daily: Facebook Group – This group of ours is so very active and vibrant from women across the nation and all different backgrounds and paths that share valuable information that help each one grow.   All the members really play a great role in supporting each other and giving ideas to help business.  It is also a place where one can get help when they feel lost and cheers when they meet their goals.  Members also share their =) and ;( and we provide ideas on how to get over hurdles and hindrances when business  does throw us the unexpected or less desirable.  You will learn so much from this amazing group of DIWs and current Independent Designers of Haute Parliament family tree.  It is through this, in addition to the sharing of real life business scenarios from each other, marketing tips and articles from the best resources in the industry, and daily posts for inspiration and personal development, that members find themselves grow as a Designer in business as well as their personal lives.

If the above is not enough, check out what takes place after one has officially joined my team and become part of our Haute Parliament family.  This is what I commit to YOU as YOUR Mentor:

Weekly: I send out Team Tuesday Tips.  This is a mini newsletter/email that I send out to my Level 1’s or personally mentored.  I pack this with tips and information that is not available anywhere else.  Many times, someone would have brought up a really important question or thing to know in our Team’s Private Group, and I would highlight it in the weekly Team Tuesday letter.

Monthly: A personal call or text message from me to all of my personally sponsored Team.  This is when I call you if I have not heard from you via emails or out Team boards in about 2 weeks.  I call so that you know that I am always here to hear you out, your frustrations and let you know that help is only a phone call away. In the past, as a newbie, there were times where I had questions or concerns but thought it was a stupid question or I was unworthy of calling because I have not sold anything.  But not here!  The lines of communication is always open and I want to know if there is anyway I can help.  This call is done whether you do thousands in sales or no sales at all.  You will  occasionally receive a “How may I serve you today?” call (or even text) from me =)

Scheduled One-on-One Personal Training:  This is my favorite part of being a Mentor; the ability to carve out a time and teach you tips and tricks that I have learned the past 14 months from my Origami Owl business.  Trainings average an hour long as they are very detailed and informative and designed to make sure that you understand things such as the back office.  You will not be seeing back office tutorials from me on YouTube.  What I do is get on the phone with you and together, I walk you through the back office while you are hands on on your computer.  These one hour trainings are in topics such as Back Office Training and Entering Party or Wholesale Orders.

VIP Training Book Club (currently on hold): Every Mentor can be a Designer but not all Designers can be a Mentor.  Those interested in taking their business a bit more seriously in every aspect and willing to invest some time in bettering themselves, their team and business are welcome to join a monthly book club facilitated by me.  The books will range in the topics of direct sales, marketing strategies, leadership and personal development.

So this is what I do for my future and current designers on my Team.  In a nutshell, I practically do all there is I can do for a Designer before and after their Waiting.  My goal is to provide my Team with all the necessary tools to soar in their business.  A the same time, the Designer is fully aware that he or she is in full control of her Orgami Owl business and its growth. I do not shove anything in one’s face and down the throat, or make one feel lesser because he or she is not “the average picture of success,” because success is relativ.  Success to you is different from what success is to me and the only legit definer of success is YOU.

*** If you would like to join Origami Owl with me, please learn more about how it works at http://locketsandcharms.origamiowl.com/join/how-it-works/ and enter in 1186 for the Referral ID. Thank You!***

If you have not done so, please visit http://youtube.com/locketsNcharms to see the video Who is LocketsNcharms ID # 1186? Click it! to meet me.

As an Owl Mama, wanting more for her owlets than she does for herself, I look SO forward to meeting you!

xoxo,

Jennylou Raya, Origami Owl Independent Designer #1186

P.S.

Do you give any freebies if I join with you?

No.  No one has straight put asked me this question but they have asked what I do for my team.  And when I state the above, free products never come up. And my hope is that they see the value in all that I offer in my time and training. Yes, you can learn by yourself plenty in the back office.  But if that were fully true, there would be no need for coaches for all we already need to know have been written in books.  Time is the most valuable thing. One can gift stuff but time, time is priceless. Time can never be bought and can never be asked back, and there is no guarantee from the person I give time to, of a return. But we give, I give it, as it is the best gift to give a new Owlet in my team.

On top of time, from time to time, I do gift my team mates for a job well done. Gifts have ranged from business supplies, shirts, bags, jewelry bar display items (owls, tablecloths, neck forms), bags, and many many gift cards =)

How to Choose a Mentor

December 8, 2012 by Jennylou

The following are the messages that Designers in Waiting (DIW) and other direct-sale company reps are receiving when it comes to choosing a Mentor:

1.Go with the one that you learned about Origami Owl from. If it weren’t for them, you would not have known about Origami Owl.
2. Go with the one that you would want to hire as your boss, one that has been working with you, training you, motivating you, helping you build yourself and your business, and answering all your questions. (I say that this person should be the person in #1 as much as possible but it does not always work that way as people differ in work ethics, values and personalities, and prefer to be affiliated Mentors for other reasons).
3. Sign with a local mentor. You will be a part of a local team meetings, have a close network, a sense of belonging. Also, it is better when you do vendor events and can split costs and even buy/share inventory as business demands.
***
I say…. when you look for a Mentor, THINK on these things:
Is she Truthful?
Is she Helpful?
Is she Inspiring?
Is she Necessary?
Is she Knowledgeable?
In addition to the above qualities, a Mentor is ultimately your business partner of your choice. Speak with you local Potential-Mentor. It is simply interviewing your potential boss for a job they will be doing for you. Is he or she actively working the business? Is she accessible? Is she learning and growing herself and her team? Is she invested in the success of others? Does she do anything special such as trainings, workshops, or provide tips found nowhere else? When you have these questions answered, you will be making a better choice for you and starting on a better foot for your business.
You are who you hang around with and the people that you associate with. Same goes with business. Your best-friend or your neighbor may be great people but you probably would never hire them as an employee, much more less as your boss. This is the only business you can choose your “boss,” – and it’s permanent- so choose accordingly 🙂

Not choosing one does not rid you of a Mentor. If you don’t have one, The Nest will choose one for you.

Designer in Waiting To Do List

November 24, 2012 by Jennylou

UPDATE: Thursday, January 3rd will be the next release date for our Designers in Waiting (DIW).

I love lists.  I don’t always follow them but I do feel better knowing that I have some kind of order going when taking on a project.  This is my list for you. I learned through trial and error and experience and here I share them with you.

I assume that you are already a ‘Designer in Waiting;’ in other words, you have joined the Origami Owl wait list.  The average wait is 2 months.  It sounds like forever but there is plenty to do to pass the time.

BEFORE

you receive your Acceptance Letter and paid for your Launch Kit

1.  READ READ READ…  the Official Company guide on DESIGNERS DO & DONT list and the DIW_FAQs.

If you have not already, read the Polices and Procedures as well. Every company has guidelines (for their affiliates/reps/distributors) and knowing the policies and procedures saves you a lot of time and money.  I cannot stress enough how important reading the P&P is.  Please read it first before going forward.

As a DIW, you should have already received and read the following from your chosen Mentor:

Designer Opportunity, Career Plan, The O2 Difference, Getting Started Checklist.  Also, find out of Origami Owl training calls for DIW and Team Calls.

If you haven’t chosen a Mentor, find one.  This is the only business where you can choose your “Boss.”  Don’t take it lightly. Ask around. Send some emails. A non-existent or “bad” mentor won’t necessarily break your business but he or she won’t help it either.  While on the wait list, you still have the freedom to look for one.  The Designer ID you put in when your entry to Origami Owl arrives in your mailbox becomes your Mentor for all your Origami Owl life  – no matter what.  You cannot change Mentors once you are in, so choose wisely!

2.  Decide on the package you will invest in when your entry comes up.  See options for Origami Owl Business Kits Launch Packages and decide on yours.

Need help deciding? Read my opinion post here: http://www.locketsandcharms.com/which-origami-owl-package-should-i-get/

3.  Start building your “Jewelry Bar” based on your Launch Kit.  This is your table that shows your Origami Owl jewelry in people’s homes, vendor events, and in your home.  It can be big or it can be small.  It is up to you.  Check out my ‘Resource’ page for Jewelry Bar ideas (under construction).

4.  Host an Origami Owl Party while you wait.  Read and take advantage of the New Hostess Program.  You can host a jewelry bar with a local Designer, or with your future-Mentor if he or she is nearby.  If you do not have a local Designer or if your future-Mentor is far away, you can host a catalog/online party.  This may sound counter-intuitive but here are the benefits of Hosting: You earn the Hostess Rewards (FREE O2 for you), you can promote that you are a future designer at your party, your friends and family will learn of the business opportunity and you start growing a team,  and you can start booking future parties.  Not having a party now can actually limit your future business.

5.  Share with others about Origami Owl.  You cannot sell for the company at this point but you may introduce people to Origami Owl by inviting them to your party, sharing your locket, and casually posting about it like you post about everything else. Do not spam or annoy people – you will push them away.  Simply “share” and be a normal and social person.  If people are interested, they will ask you for more information.

AFTER

you receive your Acceptance Letter and paid for your Launch Kit

1.  READ READ READ…  Designer Handbook, New Designer Checklist, Designer Back Office.  These will keep you focused on the most important things to do while you wait for your kit to arrive.  You get these files from your Mentor you signed up with by entering their ID # in your Acceptance Letter.  If you have never spoken to your Mentor (the person you signed up under, now is the time!)  They will be making money off of you doing your job, so make them earn it by doing theirs 😉  If you did not sign up with Designer’s # for your Mentor, the Company will randomly assign one to you.  It may take a couple of weeks before getting one.

2.  Followup with those that expressed interest in booking a party, as well as people that expressed interest in joining Origami Owl with you as their Mentor.  It is never too early to be someone’s Mentor.  You only need to be dedicated to their success as much as they are to their own and provide them the guidance they need before and after they are with Origami Owl.

3.  Book parties aka Jewelry Bars.  This is the life line of your business.  We would all love it if business came to us but the reality is that this is work –  NetWORKing.  We all must work.  There are several ways to do this and that would be a whole other post, several book recommendations, etc.

Simply focus on what I have written above.  A strong and informed DIW make for a strong Designer.  A strong Designer make for a strong business and a strong leader.  And the cycle continues…. If you want a strong team, be able to do what I have stated here and have others do the same.
