I came to America July 1987 with very limited English an exposure to all things American was a delight. Despite the occasional confusion, I found almost everything amusing. The automatic doors at the airport was pretty awesome to a 5 year old. Living in cramped apartment complexes was another new thing, one I rather not have encountered. Soon, I entered school and everyday was a source of delight and fear all wrapped into one. With all things new, nothing helped faster assimilation and learning of the “American ways” more than watching what was on TV. I loved watching Punky Brewster, Full House, Family Matters and the like. Sesame Street was cool too but my mind could not wrap around how puppets were able to talk and walk without human help. I was that kid đ
Just a few months later, the tube dawned Christmas shows, specials, and those vintage cartoons made via screen by screen shots of play dough or felt people. I was totally drawn to the classics such as Rudolf the Red-nose Reindeer and the Abominable Snowman BUT my ultimate favorite was Santa Claus and his wife Mrs. Clause. How could someone so cheerful and happy exist and be so giving? As a child with a single mom who didn’t get much, I wished that Santa would come bring me something and I was sure he would because I was that child that followed every rule and compliant to all things of authority. There was no doubt I was going to be on the “Nice” list. I wished daily that Santa would come and bring me a gift.
